Teams and more teams!
In year 7 all our students work in teams of four. These teams are
the same for every class. Students remain in these teams for two
years. The girls are taught skills that enable them to be active
members of their learning team. These teams are organised to bring
together students from different backgrounds. Students learn many
co-operative skills and take on many different roles such as
reporters, recorders, sound managers, directors, encouragers,
time-keepers, explainers and many more.
The skills that they develop in these early years of high school
promote understanding and co-operation. Students are given
opportunities to be leaders and to be active participants in their
own learning. Students use Team Work Plans to ensure that everyone
does their fair share. Our girls also do lots of independent work so
that they learn to be self reliant but also enjoy the benefits of
team work.
The most productive teams are rewarded with special awards and
morning teas each term. Students also run their own assemblies each
term and produce their own newsletter.
The teachers of year 7 also work in teams. They meet every week to
discuss their students and to trial new teaching strategies. This
means that class teachers know their students really well and can
quickly identify any special needs or particular strengths.
Our school has received many awards for our exemplary teaching
practices. Other schools in NSW as well as interstate have visited
Auburn Girls to study our Middle School program. We are recognised
as a ‘lighthouse’ school, which means that we are seen as leading
the way for other schools to follow.
